Astyanax paranae Eigenmann, 1914 (Characiformes: Characidae) in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil: diet composition and variation Neotropical Ichthyology
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Goulart,Erivelto; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz; Silva,Marlene Rodrigues da.
Aspects of the feeding ecology of a small characin, Astyanax paranae, were studied during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil (25º01'50.0'' S; 050º03'41.9'' W). Fishes were quarterly captured from the reservoir's riverine and lacustrine zones and stomachs contents of 711 adult individuals were analyzed by volumetric method. Species' feeding spectrum and spatial, temporal and sexual variations on diet were evaluated. Data matrix was summarized by detrented correspondence analysis (DCA) and the axes scores from DCA were used as variables in one-way ANOVA of null models to test diet variations. Astyanax paranae fed on detritus/sediment, plant matter, algae and aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. The time-space prevalence of...

Population structure, condition and diet of Oligosarcus paranensis (Menezes & Gery, 1983) (Osteichthyes: Characidae) at two reservoirs in South Brazil Biota Neotropica
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz; Goulart,Erivelto.
This study investigated the population parameters, condition and diet of Oligosarcus paranensis at Fiú and Mourão Reservoirs, located in Paraná State, Brazil. The fishes were collected quarterly between 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 using gillnets. Food items were quantified by volumetric method. The specimens at Fiú showed comparatively smaller length and worse condition. Sex ratio was statistically equal to 1:1 at Mourão, whereas there was a significant predominance of males at Fiú. Sex ratio also varied among size classes. Allometric growth prevailed among the studied groups. The diet consisted mainly of fishes and was complemented with invertebrates and plant matter in both reservoirs. There was a change in the feeding pattern as the standard length...

Diet of Iheringichthys labrosus (Pimelodidae, Siluriformes) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná River, Brazil-Paraguay BABT
Abes,Sara da Silva; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Okada,Edson Kiyoshi; Gomes,Luiz Carlos.
Iheringichthys labrosus is a secondary commercial fish species in the Itaipu Reservoir, but it is important in other reservoirs of the basin. However, little information exists about this species in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the diet of this species in the Itaipu Reservoir. Stomachs of 306 fishes were analyzed, collected from October 1994 to September 1996 in the differents zones of the reservoir (according to a longitudinal gradient). The reservoir was separated into riverine (upper reach), transitional (middle reach), and lacustrine (next to the dam) zones. Main items in the diet of I. labrosus were aquatic insects (mainly Chironomidae) and mollusks (mainly Bivalvia). Their presence in the diet did not vary according to...

Use of food resources and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus (Teleostei: Loricariidae) in an Atlantic Forest river in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Abilhoa,Vinicius; Valduga,Marcos O.; Frehse,Fabricio de A.; Vitule,Jean R.S..
ABSTRACT We analyzed the diet and resource partitioning among five syntopic species of Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 in the Corumbataí River in southeastern Brazil. The gut contents of 352 individuals were assessed and 21 food items were identified and quantified under an optical microscope. The food items found in the gut contents indicate that these suckermouth loricariids are bottom-dwelling detritivorous/periphytivorous catfishes. PERMANOVA and SIMPER analyses indicated variation in the consumption of some resources, and the contribution of periphytic algae was primarily responsible for such dissimilarity. ECOSIM analyses of dietary overlap showed evidence of resource sharing among all species in the dry and rainy periods. This is most likely the result of...

The importance of feeding in the larval development of the ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Arruda,Danielle C.B.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Palmeira,Carlos A.M..
The present study investigated whether the callianassid Callichirus major shows a lecithotrophic behaviour during larval development. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, larvae were subjected to an initial period of feeding, while in the second they were subjected to an initial period of starvation. In Experiment 1, 80% of C. major larvae succeeded moulting to juvenile stage in treatment with larvae fed every day. In the treatments with larvae fed for 1, 2 and 3 days there was total mortality before they reached the megalopal stage. In Experiment 2, zoea larvae showed more resistance when subjected to an initial period of starvation in which larvae starved for 1, 2 and 3 days and had survival rates of 100, 60 and 80%, respectively....

Comparative analysis of diet composition and its relation to morphological characteristics in juvenile fish of three lutjanid species in a Mexican Pacific coastal lagoon Neotropical Ichthyology
Aguilar-Betancourt,Consuelo M.; González-Sansón,Gaspar; Flores-Ortega,Juan R.; Kosonoy-Aceves,Daniel; Lucano-Ramírez,Gabriela; Ruiz-Ramírez,Salvador; Padilla-Gutierrez,Sandra C.; Curry,R. Allen.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this research was to investigate the differences in diet composition among three species of the genus Lutjanus inhabiting a coastal lagoon as juveniles. The working hypothesis was that these species feed on a common base of food resources and therefore, some niche overlap is present in terms of general diet composition. However, changes in the trophic niche with size and differences in some morphological traits among species explain observed differences in diet. Fish were collected during 42 sampling trips conducted regularly from February 2011 to January 2012 using several types of fishing gear. Total number of analyzed stomachs was 288 for Lutjanus argentiventris from 2.3 to 19.9 cm total length (TL); 178 for Lutjanus colorado...

Overlap of dietary niche and electivity of three shrimp species (Crustacea, Decapoda) in a tropical coastal lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) Zoologia
Albertoni,Edélti Faria; Palma-Silva,Cleber; Esteves,Francisco de Assis.
Three species of shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817), F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) (Penaeidae) and Macrobrachium acanthurus (Wiegmann, 1836) (Palaemonidae) were sampled at the Imboassica lagoon (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil), in order to estimate the overlap of dietary niches and electivity of their prey, through the analysis of the fauna associated with the macroalgae Chara and of the benthic fauna on the sediment. The overlap of dietary niches was estimated using five indexes. A total of 495 F. brasiliensis, 131 F. paulensis and 102 M. acanthurus stomachs were examined. The results of the different indexes of niche overlap exhibited the same general trend in the three species, indicating a high degree of homogeneity in the diet...

Alimentação dos peixes detritívoros da Baía Tuiuiú, rio Paraguai, Pantanal de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Infoteca-e

Alvarez, J.S.; Sorí, M.A.; Pelegrin, E.; Galindo, J..

Effect of ascorbic acid on food preference and consumption in captive capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) BABT
Alvarez,Martín Roberto; Kravetz,Fernando Osvaldo.
The aim of this work was to study the short and long term influences of ascorbic acid on Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, if supplemented in their food. No differences regarding food intake were observed in the absence of vitamin C. On a daily basis, animals accustomed to food containing ascorbic acid prefered to continue eating the same food. Food preference in capybaras did not seem to depend on ascorbic acid availability; however, when accustomed to vitamin C, capybaras might recognize and select ascorbic acid in subsequent food. Mechanisms allowing capybaras to "evaluate" the nutritional quality of their food are discussed, as well as the adaptive value of this behavior in free ranging populations.

Diet of Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1959 in streams from Paraná River basin: influence of the urbanization Biological Sciences
Alves, Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Tófoli, Raffael Marcos; Ganassin, Maria Julia Mileo; Hahn, Norma Segatti.
This study aimed to assess the diet of Poecilia reticulata in rural (RS) and urban stream (US) and under seasonal influence. We hypothesized that rainfall have a strong negative impact on the diet of the species in the US, due to its abrupt effect on food resources; in RS this effect is less apparent. Both streams belong to Pirapó River sub-basin, Paraná River basin. Fishes were sampled bimonthly, between July 2007 and June 2008 in three sample sites along the longitudinal gradient of the streams, using electrofishing. According to the Feeding Index, in both streams the population consumed almost exclusively detritus associated with aquatic organisms (>95%), regardless of the hydrological period. The main taxa explored by fish were Simuliidae in RS and...

Growth, feeding and distribution of the solenette Buglossidium luteum with particular reference to its habitat preference ArchiMer
Amara, Rachid; Mahe, K; Le Pape, Olivier; Desroy, N.
Growth, condition, diet and spatial distribution of the solenette Buglossidium luteum (Risso, 1810) were investigated along the coasts of the French Atlantic, eastern English Channel and Southern Bight of the North Sea. Distribution and habitat preferences of solenette were analysed in relation to physical and biological features presumed to influence fish distribution. B. luteum was patchily distributed and concentrated in shallow muddy and muddy-sand bottoms moderately influenced by estuarine waters (euhaline waters). In the studied area, solenette seemed to find habitats suitable for growth. Food availability was not assumed to be a limiting factor for solenette distribution in contrast to abiotic factors such as salinity.
